Ski hill bedlam

Marge (Dover) Kurtz remembered working double shifts at St. Charles Memorial Hospital when she first came from North Dakota in 1964.

She also remembered well dealing with ski injuries. Early equipment was less safe than modern gear, so leg and knee injuries were common.

“Our biggest thing was Saturday and Sunday about 5 o’clock. You knew that it was going to be bedlam because in those days Mount Bachelor, when (skiers) got hurt, they just kind of put them some place, stacked them up. And then when they closed they all came in. X-ray and lab, everybody knew we were going to be busy,” she said.

Kurtz retired as director of nursing in 1997.
